Update on Kearney Shootings Last Week

On Sunday, May 14, 2023 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Kearney Police Department Officers received a report of gunshots fired in the 1000 block of W 23rd Street. When officers arrived, an adult male subject was contacted near W 23rd and 7th Ave suffering from an apparent laceration/stab wound to the leg. Officers administered first aid at the scene and called for a rescue squad. The victim was transported by EMS to CHI Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Department with a serious but non-life-threatening laceration.

Officers located evidence of multiple gunshots in the area with several residential structures being struck by gunfire. Kearney Police Investigators and Crime Lab Specialists were called to the scene to process and collect evidence. At this time there are no reports or evidence of anyone being struck by gunfire.

On Sunday, May 14th at approximately 9:50pm officers responded to a report of multiple gunshots in the 700 block of West 25th street.  No damage or injuries were reported in that incident. 

On Wednesday, May 17th at approximately 3:50am an officer heard gunshots in the area of 611 West 25th Street and located multiple bullet holes in that residence. The residence was occupied at the time but no injuries were reported. 

Following extensive and still on-going investigations, with assistance from Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office and Buffalo County Attorney’s Office, several suspects have been identified related to these shootings. A 17-year-old male from Kearney was arrested on an arrest warrant for Aiding and Abetting a Felony (Discharging a Firearm Near a Building). A second 17-year-old male from Kearney was arrested for 3rd Degree Assault. A 26-year-old male from Kearney was arrested for 3rd Degree Assault. 

This investigation is still ongoing and multiple warrants and arrests are anticipated. Updates will be provided as additional factual information is developed.

Once again, violent crime is unsettling and will not be accepted in our community. I am confident we will locate and arrest everyone involved in this senseless criminal activity.
