Hastings Fire & Rescue responded to a structure fire on Saturday, Oct. 5 involving the detached
garage at 1203 E. Ninth St. Firefighters were dispatched at 12:45 p.m. and had the fire under control about 20 minutes after arriving on scene. The homeowner helped control the fire using a garden hose until firefighters were present. The garage, which was a significant distance from the residence, has been determined to be a total loss.

The fire was reported by multiple people due to the proximity to the Hastings College football
game, which began shortly after the fire was reported. Hastings Rural Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid. Hastings Police Department and Hastings Utilities also responded to the incident. Hastings Utilities shut off power to the residence and detached structure.

No injuries were reported and no other structures were damaged. The fire has been determined to be accidental in nature, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Hastings Fire & Rescue urges caution when using powered equipment of any kind, especially in these dry conditions.
