Stars kick their way past Wildcats.

The St. Paul Wildcats kicked off their 2024 season in Class C2 at Home Friday Night as they welcomed the Kearney Catholic Stars to St. Paul.

The opening possession saw the Stars eat almost 8 minutes off the clock in the first quarter before Solomon Wiens hit his first of four Field Goals hitting a 28 yarder with 3:31 to play. The Cats went 3 and out on their opening possession. A solid punt return setup the Stars with great field position but St. Pauls defense would force another Field goal this time from 35 yards out for Wiens with :03 to play in the First Quarter.

The score would stay the same through the 2nd quarter as Kearney Catholic held a 6-0 lead at the Halftime Break.

The 2nd half started with fireworks as St. Paul fumbled the opening kickoff to start the 2nd half and the Stars wasted no time with a one play 15 yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Jake Bosshamer to Owen Axmann for 13-0 lead with 11:41 to play in the 3rd. On the ensuing possession for the Wildcats they got a spark from Senior Cody Kuszak breaking an 80 yard TD run with 10:41 to play in the 3rd to cut it down to 6 at 13-7. 

Kearney Catholic tacked on two more field goals for Wiens as he set a Class C2 Record for most FGs made in a game for Class at 4 with the field goals ranging from 31 and 24 yards respectively as the Stars pickup the victory by a Final Score of 19-7

Mason Majerus earns Runza MVP of the game honors with his defensive efforts vs. the Stars.

St. Paul(0-1) will be back in action next Friday on Country 96 vs. Raymond Central. The Mustangs defeated Fillmore Central 28-8 for their opening game.

Kearney Catholic(1-0) will be at "Home" next Friday as they play Ord(0-1) at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium on the Campus of the University of Nebraska-Kearney due to ongoing construction on their home field.
