Nelson Pitches One Hitter In 3-0 Win At Columbus

Home Federal Baseball

(Columbus, NE) - A pitching masterpiece from Cohen Nelson Tuesday night at Columbus led the charge for Grand Island Home Federal in a 3-0 win. Nelson had a no-hitter going through six innings. The lone hit of the night for Columbus would come in the top of the 7th from Connor Cameron. A ball that was hit off the bat skimmed the side of the mound making it a tough get for Nelson off the mound. Ethan Foley was also charging in from 2nd base but couldn't get to it in time before Cameron made it to first base. The contest was scoreless after four innings. In the outing for Nelson, who moves to 3-0 on the summer campaign, he had 94 pitches, 63 strikes, one hit given up, one walk, 12 strikeouts, and retired the first 11 Columbus batters in order.

Grand Island would break the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning with the top of the order coming through with back-to-back singles from Ethan Foley and Ian Arends. Broxton Barientos would follow with an RBI single brining in the first run of the game. Gabe Ruiz would then get a sac fly to right field to score Arends for GI to lead 2-0. Grand Island would add a insurance run in the top of the 7th as Gabe Ruiz would sky a ball high in the air close to the right field foul line. Columbus would take chase but the ball would fall into fair territory between the fielders scoring Ethan Foley to make it 3-0.
