(Sioux City, IA) – The Hastings Broncos fell to the Morningside Mustangs 52-7 in Sioux City on Saturday.

Morningside opened the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown on their second drive. Hastings responded with a 5-play, 79-yard touchdown drive, as sophomore Carson Kudlacek found senior wide receiver Ethan Wilborn for a 21-yard touchdown to tie it up at seven at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs connected on a 57-yard touchdown pass, then got another touchdown at the end of a 12-play, 81-yard drive to make it 21-7.

After a Bronco punt, Morningside scored their final touchdown of the half on a 7-yard pass. Hastings managed a first down on their next series, but ran out of time as they went into halftime down 28-7.

A favorable Mustang kick return set them up at the Morningside 40, then they scored their fifth touchdown four plays later. Hastings went three and out on their opening second half drive and the Mustangs returned the punt return for a touchdown to take a 42-7 lead.

Hastings had a promising drive to start the half as sophomore Josh Ray picked up a first down on the ground and Kudlacek's short pass to junior Eli Nappe also picked up a first down, but the drive stalled after that sequence. With the Mustangs entering the Bronco redzone, sophomore defensive back Colton Marsh intercepted the pass to the end zone near the end of the third quarter.

Morningside scored first in the fourth quarter on a 26-yard field goal, but were stopped on their next possession on a fourth-and-one by senior defensive lineman Gavin White. The Mustangs scored the final touchdown on a 50-yard rushing touchdown, making the final score 52-7.

Kudlacek finished the game 10-19 for 86 yards and a touchdown, Ray had 14 carries for 42 yards and a 33-yard reception, and Wilborn had 3 catches for 40 yards. Junior Jayden Roberts and senior Caden Egr led the team with 10 tackles each, while White had a team-high two sacks.

Up next, Hastings will travel to Fremont, NE to take on Midland at 1pm on Saturday, October 19.
