MCC golfers third at Heritage Hills meet

The McCook Community College golf team wrapped up the fall portion of the season-long Region IX schedule at home with a third-place finish Friday.

Eastern Wyoming was the only team to break 600 for the two-day tournament, posting a 22-over par 598, 20 shots ahead of second place Otero College (618). MCC was third with a 634, North Platte fourth with a 662 and Northeastern Junior College fifth with a 675.

“Although they guys didn’t play like they had hoped to, it was nice hosting our event out at Heritage Hills this week,” said MCC Coach Grant Case. “We got two days with not a lot of wind, which is super rare out there, but no matter the weather conditions, the golf course is always demanding.”

The Indians were one of two teams to improve on Thursday’s scores at Heritage Hills Golf Course. MCC shot a 318 Thursday and a 316 Friday.

“From a team perspective, despite anyone having their best stuff, we hung in there pretty well,” said Case. “Although it was only by two shots, it was nice to see a second day improvement from the guys.”

MCC sophomore Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) was the only golfer in the field to post par on Friday and finished third in the individual scores. After shooting a 77 Thursday he finished the tournament with a five-over par 149.

Sophomore Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) carded rounds of 77 and 80 to finish in 10th place. Freshman Cole Graham (McCook) had rounds of 81 and 82 to finish in a tie for 15th place.

Chance Gambini (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nevada) shot an 83 Thursday and an 82 on Friday. Freshman Thatcher Ommert (Montgomery, Texas) posted rounds of 87 and 83.

The Region IX schedule starts back up March 20 in Lamar Colo., with MCC returning to Heritage Hills on the second week of the spring schedule, March 27-28.

“With the off-season now here, guys are looking forward to making more technical changes with their swings, as well as getting stronger in the weight room,” said Case. “There’s lots of areas of the game for us to touch up and improve before we getting rolling again in the spring.”
