STERLING, Colo. – The McCook Community College golfers finished in a fourth-place tie Friday after the second of two rounds at the Northeastern Junior College at Riverview Golf Course.

Otero College came from seven shots back on Thursday to nip Eastern Wyoming by one shot, 578 to 579. Central Wyoming was six shots back in third while MCC tied Northeastern Junior College with scores of 629.

“Not really the result we were looking for this week after a top three placement last week,” said MCC Coach Grant Case. “Although there were lots of positives to take away, and areas where we need to improve.”

Sophomore Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) who shot an even-par 70 Thursday, began the day in fifth place and posted a second-round 73 to finish at two-over par which was good for an eighth-place tie.

“Andrew continues to play well and lead the team,” said Case.

Freshman Xander Sellman (Iola, Kan.) was tied for the lead after the first round with three other golfers, all posting one-under par 70s. He shot a 75 on Friday to finish at three-over for the tournament and earned a top 10 finish.

“Xander bounced back from a rough week last week and snuck into the top 10,” said Case.

Sophomore Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) had rounds of 79 and 77 to finish at 156.  Thatcher Ommert (freshman, Montgomery, Texas) had rounds of 82 and 80 to finish with a 162.

“Ross was able to get two rounds in the 70s which is encouraging, but he still is expecting more from himself,” said Case.

Sophomore Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nevada) shot a 167 and Cole Graham (freshman, McCook) posted a 169.

MCC heads to Colorado for the next two weeks of Region IX play at La Junta and Lamar before concluding the fall portion of the slate at home Oct. 10-11 for two days at Heritage Hills Golf Course.

“We’re looking forward to a good week of practice and getting back on the course next week in La Junta,” said Case.
