The accolades continue to pour in for Islanders football coach Jeff Tomlin, who announced yesterday that he is retiring from teaching and coaching at the end of the current school year.  The Alliance native spent 21 seasons on the sidelines at Grand Island Senior High, guiding the Islanders to 19 playoff appearances during his tenure.  He finished his career with a 149-74 record for Grand Island, leading them to the Class A state title game in 2018.

The NSAA state football playoffs wrapped up day one of their championship festival at Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium yesterday.  Stanton took top honors in D1, edging EMF 42-36; the D2 title was snatched by Sandhills/Thedford thanks to a 50-12 whipping of Wynot; Bennington captured their third straight Class B trophy with a 21-0 shutout of Omaha Skutt.  A matchup of unbeaten teams starts the final day of play today as Wahoo battles Boone Central for the C1 crown; it’s Ord against Norfolk Catholic for the C2 top spot this afternoon; the Class A final tonight sees Omaha Westside and Elkhorn South going head to head.

Monday night football saw the Kansas City Chiefs take a 17-7 lead to the halftime locker room, then watched the Eagles rally for a pair of second half scores to escape with a 21-17 decision at Arrowhead Stadium.  They’ll return to action against the Raiders at Las Vegas Sunday.

Husker football has one home game remaining in their 2023 season, battling for bowl eligibility against Big Ten West champ Iowa Friday in Lincoln.  Friday’s kickoff is at 11 am; complete game day coverage begins at 7:00.

Nebraska men’s basketball is breathing rare air, sitting 5-0 after Saturday’s romp over previously unbeaten Oregon State in Sioux Falls. It marks their best stretch to open a season since the 2008-2009 season.  They’ll host Duquesne tomorrow night in the opening round of the Cornhusker Classic, then face Cal State Fullerton Sunday; they’ll face in-state rival Creighton Sunday, December 3rd.

The Nebraska women will be in Florida for the Thanksgiving weekend, taking on Lamar in round one of the St. Pete Showcase in St. Petersburg.  The ladies are now 3-1 after dropping a 79-74 home heartbreaker to 22nd ranked Creighton Sunday afternoon.  The Huskers will close out their trip Saturday afternoon against TCU.
