Grand Island Crime Rate Reduced by 14% in 2024

Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Police Department is starting 2025 off on a great foot, as the final crime statistics for 2024 show a promising trend.

The overall crime rate in Grand Island dropped by 14.37% in 2024, and it’s a spark GIPD hopes will carry them into their new goal of an additional 20% in 2025.

“If you’re going to be a leader and you’re going to be a police department that’s exceptional, you need to put an exceptional goal out there,” GIPD Chief Kevin Denney said. “We’re going to do the best we can, and if we don’t get that reduction, we’re going to figure out what we’re not doing right along the way.”

The ambitious goal comes with four main focus points:

  *   Leadership and Culture within the police department
  *   Improving community engagement
  *   Strategic policing initiatives
  *   Visible patrol

The Grand Island Police Department will be publicizing crime statistics on a monthly basis on both its social media pages as well as its website at www.gipolice.org in an effort to be transparent with the community. In turn, Chief Denney says it will bring even more accountability to the department and its officers.

“We aren’t doing this to boast or brag about the work we’ve done,” Chief Denney said. “We’re being open and communicative about this to show the public how far we’ve come, but also to show them how much more we want to accomplish in 2025.”
