GIPD Urges Vigilance with Colder Weather Arriving

Grand Island, Neb. — With temperatures plummeting over the next week, the Grand Island Police Department is wanting to remind residents that vehicle thefts typically rise this time of year.

In fact, GIPD has received reports of seven stolen vehicles since Monday, December 30. They have since recovered six of the vehicles and have suspects for all seven of the thefts. However, it’s the nature of the thefts that is prompting this annual warning.

All seven thefts involved vehicles that were running with keys inside in the early morning hours. It’s a common practice for people to warm up their cars before heading to work, but there are a few ways to safeguard against theft in the process.

First, never leave your car running unlocked and unattended. If you want to warm up your car, you’re encouraged to lock it and use a spare key to get in when it’s time to go. You’re also encouraged to park in a well-lit, secure area.

If none of those options are possible, consider installing a remote starter or using anti-theft devices like a steering wheel lock if you must leave your car briefly while it warms up. Other anti-theft reminders are to never leave your keys in your ignition with the doors unlocked, never hide your spare key inside your car and make sure to remove all valuables from your car or store them out of sight.
