GICC Basketball Takes Wins Vs Ord

(Grand Island, NE) - The Grand Island Central Catholic basketball teams defeated Ord on Thursday night at Crusader Gym for the first contest for the new year. The GICC girls would hang on for a 50-46 victory. The Crusaders girls would have a 34-15 halftime lead highlighted by 7 first-half three-pointers. Ord would chip away at the deficit to trail 37-26 at the end of three quarters. The Chanticleers would then tie the game at 41-41 in the fourth quarter with under four minutes to play, but would never take the lead. Ord would outscore GICC in the fourth quarter 20-13. Crusaders would end the game with 9 made three-pointers. Maggie Herbek led the charge with 23 points, and fellow senior Bryndal Moody had 19. GICC girls are now 4-4 on the season. Ord with the loss drops to 4-5. 

In the boy's contest, it was and early lead for the Chats but then GICC hit the gas and never looked back in a 72-44 win. The Crusaders picked up their 5 win in a row. GICC led 39-22 at the halftime break and then really opened things up in the third quarter with a 21-7 run to then lead 60-29 after three quarters. Strong defense that would cause turnovers led to points for the Crusaders along with strong outside shooting led by Thomas Birch who would have 17 points in the game along with 13 from Thomas Liban. GICC would knock down 8 three-pointers in the contest. GICC is now 7-2. Ord with the loss drops to 3-5. 

Both GICC teams will return on Saturday, Jan. 4th at Seward. The girls' game will be at 2:00 pm, and the boys' game will follow at 3:30 pm. Both games will air live on KRGI 1430/105.5 & krgi.com
