GI Home Federal Suffers Heartbreaker vs Creighton Prep, 7-6

(Kearney, NE) - Sunday's game against Creighton Prep was a heartbreaker for Grand Island Home Federal Bank, as they lost the lead late in a 7-6 defeat at Kearney Memorial Field in a winners bracket game of the Class A State American Legion baseball National Division tournament. The game was tied at six in the top of the eighth when Sam Bohnet singled, scoring one run.

Grand Island Home Federal Bank fell behind by four runs in the seventh inning, but then tried to fight back. Grand Island Home Federal Bank closed the gap by scoring on a single, a flyout, and a solo home run.

Creighton Prep opened the scoring in the second after Bo Reverts doubled, scoring one run.

Grand Island Home Federal Bank tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth thanks to two singles. GI tied the game at two on a single by Bryson Walker.

Creighton Prep captured the lead, 6-2, in the top of the seventh when Bohnet singled, scoring two runs, Ivan Sookram tripled, scoring one run, and Liam Smithberg singled, scoring one run.

Grand Island Home Federal Bank tied the game in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a single by Walker, a fly out by Gabe Ruiz, and a solo home run to left field by Grayson Sack.

Pierce Wagstaff earned the win for Creighton Prep. The pitcher gave up zero hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out one and walking none. Kingston Loften took the loss for Grand Island Home Federal Bank. The righty went one and one-third innings, surrendering one run (zero earned) on three hits, striking out one and walking two. Sack began the game for Grand Island Home Federal Bank. The starting pitcher gave up five hits and four runs over six and one-third innings, striking out three and walking two. Mike Novero opened the game for Creighton Prep. The starting pitcher gave up 10 hits and six runs (four earned) over seven innings, striking out two and walking one.

Grand Island Home Federal Bank amassed 10 hits in the game. Brody Davidson, Ian Arends, Ethan Mader, and Walker each collected two hits for Grand Island Home Federal Bank. Sack, Ruiz, Arends, and Walker each drove in one run for Grand Island Home Federal Bank. Grand Island Home Federal Bank turned in one double play in the game.

Creighton Prep piled up 10 hits in the game. Bohnet led Creighton Prep with two runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. The right fielder went 2-for-4 on the day.
