Creighton Women Defeat Seton Hall 72-64

South Orange, N.J. -- Seniors Morgan Maly and Molly Mogensen teamed to supply 41 points to lift Creighton women's basketball to a 72-64 road win over Seton Halll on Saturday, January 11.

The win moved the Bluejays to 14-3 on the season and 6-0 in BIG EAST action, while Seton Hall fell to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

During the opening stanza both teams used short bursts to seize the advantage as Seton Hall surged ahead 7-4 with five straight, only the see the Bluejays answer with a bucket from Maly and a trey from senior Jayme Horan to reclaim the edge at 9-7 (4:24). The squads traded jabs throughout the first quarter with the Bluejays holding a 17-15 lead at the buzzer.

Seton Hall quickly tied the game on the opening possession of the second at 17-17, but that would be the final tie of the game. Creighton created a sliver of separation with a 7-0 run, started by a trey from Maly and followed by buckets from junior Kennedy Townsend and Mogensen to building a 24-17 (7:26). Holding a 31-27 edge with 3:11 remaining, the Bluejays closed the half with eight straight as senior Lauren Jensen connected from long range and knocked down a pair from the free throw line, then Maly splashed home another trifectas to give the Bluejays a 39-27 lead at the break.

Creighton pushed its edge out to 17 at 44-27 early in the second half, but the Pirates outscored the Bluejays 22-11 over the final nine minutes of the frame to send the game to the fourth at 55-49.

In spite of the Bluejays pushing the game back to double digits twice in the opening moments of the fourth, the Pirate refused to yield. With Creighton holding a 62-52 lead (7:41), Seton Hall rattled off seven straight in under one minute to make it a one possession contest. Mogensen got the Bluejays back on track with a driving layup with 6:03 left. The defense for both squads tightened over the next three minutes, yet a Pirate free throw and layup set the score at 64-62 with 2:29 on the clock.

Crunch time saw Maly take over with back-to-back three balls, connecting from the left corner and again from near NBA range at the right elbow extended to seal the win.

Maly led all scorers with 23 points, while Mogensen closed play with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds.Seton Hall got 18 points from Faith Masonius, 11 from Jada Eads and 10 from I'yanna Lops in the loss.

Creighton returns to the court on Saturday, January 18 as the Bluejays host DePaul in D.J. Sokol Arena at 2:00 p.m.
