CNCAA Particpates in National Recovery Month


National Recovery Month started in 1989 as a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible.  We invite you to participate and celebrate with us!!  The Central Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Addictions (CNCAA) will be hosting multiple events throughout the month of September to raise awareness, reduce stigmas, celebrate the miracle of recovery, and to offer HOPE to those who still struggle.

Please join us for any one or all of the following FREE learning opportunities to be held in Grand Island. 

Lunch-n-Learns and Community Events
Thursday, Sept 5 from 630-8pm at College Park – an Opioid awareness event with Stephen Hill – founder of Speak Sobriety, young person in recovery, bestselling author, recovery coach, defense attorney, and renowned national speaker --  a truly inspiring comeback story that everyone must hear.  (no food/drink)

Tuesday, Sept 10 from Noon – 1pm at CNCAA – Janie Mick, CNCAA Program Facilitator will present information about Alcohol Addiction and High Risk vs Low Risk Choices – learn more about common risk factors and how to identify warning signs.  Pre-registration is encouraged. Friday, Sept 13 from Noon – 1pm at CNCAA -- Anna Fruehling of Grand Island will present “Addiction is a Disease, Not a Decision” followed by a book signing of her book “An Altered Spirit” with all book sales proceeds gifted to CNCAA.  Anna’s book is a love story and gratitude offering that relies on a timeless tale to help others view the twelve-step process to recovery in a new way to ultimately realize a transformed life.  Anna has been substance free since March 19, 1989. Monday, Sept 16 from Noon – 1pm at CNCAA  – “Opioids, Overdose, & Narcan” with Russ Blackburn, Emergency Medical Services Chief with the Grand Island Fire Administration, Paramedic for 24 years, Firefighter for 29 years.  Russ will present information on Narcan use and why it’s important to have this available in our community. Wed & Thurs, Sept 18-19, from 11am – 1pm at CNCAA – Michelle Halpine with Tobacco Free Hall County will host two 2-hour lunch-n-learn sessions called “Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul.” James Monsees and Adam Bowen dreamed of a new way to quit smoking; creating a product, the Juul e-cigarette, which became too cool for its own good, sparking what health officials labeled an “epidemic” of youth addiction. Join us to learn how e-cigarettes became an epidemic and changed the tobacco industry for good. Pre-registration is encouraged. Email Sheri at [email protected]. Thursday, Sept 26 at Noon – 1pm at CNCAA -- Lorinda Brown with the Strengthening Families Program will talk about the power of parents and parental influence, along with providing tips to help families help themselves. Friday, Sept 27 from 12 – 2pm at CNCAA  -- QPR Suicide Prevention Training with Hunter Ludwig.  QPR is a nationally-recognized and evidence-based training which provides 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. QPR will train people to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help. Pre-registration is encouraged. Email Sheri at [email protected]. Recovery Walk and Rally – Saturday, September 28, 9am – 12:30pm
The grand finale of National Recovery Month will take place on Saturday, September 28th with a Recovery Walk and Rally to be held at CNCAA, 3204 College Street in Grand Island and will include the following activities:
  8:30am    Check-in/Set up for Resource Fair Booths
  9:00 – 10:00am   Check-In for Walkers/Runners  $30/person (13 and older); $15/youth (12 and under). Entry fee includes Event T-Shirt, Food & Drink
