Update - Barr Middle School placed on lockout Thursday morning

Update/Follow Up 1:30pm

Barr Middle School was placed on lockout Thursday morning after an alleged threat was made by a community member toward a staff member.

Following a disagreement about the treatment of a student, a parent made threats toward a staff member of Barr Middle School.

As a precaution, the school went into lock out. Grand Island Police Officers were able to locate the subject, and after an investigation and threat assessment, took an adult male into custody in reference to those threats at around 11 am this morning.

Police Department officials have no reason to believe that there is any further risk to the students or staff in relation to this incident. The lock out, which lasted a little over an hour, was lifted shortly after the arrest was made.

Barr Middle School was placed on lockout Thursday morning after an alleged threat was made by a community member toward a staff member.

When the threat was received, GIPS contacted local emergency response officials and ordered that the school implement security procedures. The Grand Island Police Department immediately began a threat assessment.

While the vast majority of school threats don’t involve criminal charges, we believe that it is appropriate to always notify public safety officials and conduct a thorough scan of the grounds and facility whenever a threat is received. All threats to our school or students are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

GIPS continues to work with Grand Island police as it completes its threat assessment. Barr Middle School remains in lockout mode as of 10 a.m
