Awards Ceremony to Recognize 3rd Graders for Creation of Home Fire Escape Plans
Grand Island, Neb. — In recognition of fire prevention week activities, the Grand Island Fire Department (GIFD) conducted an education program called “The Great Escape” for Grand Island third graders.
As part of the program, children were asked to create a home fire safety plan that includes two fire escape routes per room, a central meeting place for the family outside the home and a detailed drawing of how to escape from each room.
GIFD personnel judged the plans and have selected a winner from each participating third grade classroom. In addition to the class winners, the staff also selected an overall winner from all applicants.
At 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 24, GIFD will host a ceremony will be held at Fire Station #1 to award the winners. All class winners will then be given a ride to their schools in a fire engine. In addition to the ride to school, the overall winner will be taken up in the fire department’s aerial platform at their school, which will be coordinated with the overall winner’s principal and take place at a time convenient to the school as well as GIFD.
