ASPIRE program launches ‘Harry Potter and the Bible’ class

(Hastings, Nebraska) – The Hastings College ASPIRE program has launched a seven-week fall continuing education class, “Harry Potter and the Bible,” which begins Tuesday, October 1.

Taught by college chaplain Rev. Doodle Harris, the class explores the connections between the original seven Harry Potter books and Bible Stories. Each Tuesday evening, those in the class will gather online with other Harry Potter friends and dig into some of the narratives that author J.K. Rowling — intentionally? unintentionally? — connects to Biblical themes.

Registration for the class is $100 for an individual or $200 for a church group. Registration helps sustain the ASPIRE program at Hastings College. To register and learn more, go to hastings.edu/harrypotter.

Classes will be held on the following Tuesday evenings: October 1, 8, 22 and 29, and November 5, 12 and 19.

Harris said the class appeals to a wide audience, including church leaders and groups interested in the intersection of faith and pop culture, pastors looking for new faith formation opportunities, young people and adults.

“Although we will focus on the books specifically, familiarity with the movies should be enough to make this opportunity meaningful,” she said.

Deadline to register is September 24. Registration confirmation and links to online classes will be sent via email.
